Indian Cinema & Social Irresponsibility…
                                             -Ankit JHA

December of 2012, a girl in her early 20s met an accident on the streets of Indore, she was found guilty of rash driving. As her friend quoted that she said, ‘let’s try.’ This try was to imposter the speed sequence performed by Actress Asin in her movie Khiladi 786, but she didn’t know that it’s going to cost her life. This is among those cases that shows that why do we say Cinema, the mirror of society. It mirrors the episodes in such a manner that leaves an impact on the coming generations. Cinema is an important mean for the mass communication. Recent growth in the technology and response of consumerism has marked Cinema the strongest medium for the social communication. No Literature or Radio or Television Programs touches the mark has been placed by Cinema. Cinema has the ability to combine entertainment with communication of ideas. It has the potential appeal for its audience. It certainly leaves other media far behind in making such an appeal. As in literature, cinema ahs produced much which touches the innermost layers of the man. Cinema presents an image of the society in which it is born and the hopes, aspirations, frustration and contradictions present in any given social order. In this manner it lacks behind in fulfilling the social responsibility that many a times is connected with it.

The biography of Vengeance: the Source of Crime in Country:
Barge in the library of Indian films, rummage through it and take out any random movie and it will be a revenge drama. Any genre but end is same good’s win over evil. Every big movie of any decade has been an avenge drama whether its Sholay or Zanjeer of 1970s, Karz, Karma or Meri Jung of 1980s, Darr. Anjaam, or Agneepath of 1990s. Then came Ghajini, Gadar or Dabangg in 2000s. When we entered the second decade of 21st century, new revenge saga were created, take Agneepath, Shootout At Wadala, Gangs of Wasseypur etc. Experts say Vengeance in a bollywood film is the source of all crimes in India. It provokes, inspires and teaches to kill, molest and triumph at any cost. Example of Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan starrer Anjaam, where a man in love with a girl kills her husband and sends the girl behind bars. Girl takes revenge even when boy has become stationery suffering an accident or Trimurti, where a mother orders his brother to rear her 3 sons in order to kill the demon who killed their father. There are many examples of such movies whose central idea is revenge. It delivers a wrong message in the society. 241986 voilent crimes were registered in 2010, which consisted of Murders and many a murders were for the personal reasons so were the rapes.

Dhoom, Tashan to Gangs of Wasseypur: Being inhuman:

It all began with Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen, then it elongated so significantly that today it has become a culture. Indians do have a habit to make a culture out of a habit. Bandit Queen-Satya-Vastav-Kaante-Khakee-Dus-Kurbaan-Ishaqzaade-Ye Saali Zindagi-Tashan-Dabangg-Gangs of Wasseypur and Shootout at Wadala, if we add the number od firings in these movies we will get a number that will almost beyond the bullets used in World War 2. It was just a satire though. Then some films like Dhoom, Dhoom 2 and Blue inspires for nothing but towards the hell. Chain Snatching, Rash Driving and petty Thefts increased drastically. Crime rate in 2004 was increased by 168% in comparison of 2003, on an average 1 IPC crime every 17 seconds were registered and 7317839 persons were arrested in the year(http://ncrb.nic.in/ciiprevious/Data/CD-CII2007/cii-2004). The condition even worsened in 2007 after the release of Apaharan, Dhoom2 and Dus. Crime rate increased from 167 to 176% in 2007, also arrests for theft was 17,1 % of all total arrests and thefts (12284) accounted for the 64.1 % total crime in railways. 118 Custodial deaths were reported along with 1 custodial rape. This was the same year when Shootout at Lokhandwala was released.
Then as soon as Indian Cinema entered its 97th year or the second decade of 21st century; crime rate of country along with Crime thriller genre started to increase. The father of all crime movies in India Gangs of Wasseypur came on the floors in 2012 Saawan and the Bahaar of crime kicked off. Crime rate increased by a considerable rate of 2.3% from 2011, it was the same time when Delhi became the story hub and it accounted for 10.1 % of total crimes reported in 53 Mega cities. Because the type of movies shot in Delhi were Jannat 2, Delhi Belly, Zila Ghaziabad etc.244270 cases were registered against women, which increased by the rate of 41.74%. for every hour 273 cases were registered and 373 persons were arrested in 2012, Which also included the heinous gang rape of Medical Student in Delhi.

The saga of Indian Cinema and social irresponsibility will be continued.....
