The Precarious Reel to Deal: An Appreciation Note for The Conjuring
                                                        - Ankit Jha

Amityville, US, 2 girls horrified by the presence of an Annabelle Doll, which writes a note ‘MISS ME?’ to them, they ask the Paranormal Investigators & Devout Catholic Christian Couple ‘Ed & Lorraine Warren’ played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Framiga. Then story moves to Harrisville, Rhode Island, down in 1970s when a family of 7, sorry 8 if we include Sandie, the dog, moves in a secluded Farm House, having bought in an auction. Family consists of Roger Perron (Ron Livingston), Carolyn Perron (Lily Taylor) and their 5 different sized daughters. As soon as they enter the house, the paranormal & demonic activities begin to take place, which surely reminds us the Kilos of Horror movies crafted till date. Dog denies enter the haunted house, All the clocks stop functioning at 3:07 AM, there is a smell of rotten meat in house, there is a spooky cellar, mother gets some mysterious bruises on her body & the scary noises which makes it a horror movie.
It admonishes you not to play ‘Hide & Clap’  especially when you are all alone in home with a girl of 5 who already has befriended with a ghost called Rory. I am not going to play it even in crowd nor going to have any doll. This movie is based on the allegedly true events told by Lorraine Warren and the screenplay by Chad and Carey Hayes, who scripted remake of ‘House of Wax’, crafts it in the new style adjoining both the families ‘The Warrens & the Parrens.’ Australian Director James Wan, who in past has directed & wrote all time thriller classic ‘SAW’, comes again in a break through appearance with his partner of good times, cinematographer John Leonetti (famous for the Mask, The Scorpion King). This movie is different from various horrors, because it’s not just scary but performed & narrated in its truest form. There are various sequences, where you are compulsed to admire, like the sequence where Carolyn searches for her daughter in the cellar while playing ‘Hide & Clap’, Carolyn falling in the haunted basement, Annabelle doll scaring Judy, the daughter of ED and the best sequence of my recent memory where Ed performs Exorcism & he stops it with calling Bathsheba. These all sequences come at different intervals and scares you. Movie spurts and gives you no time to engulf the smartly penned dialogues which sound philosophical at times. Editing by Kirk Morrey and Cinematography by Leonetti is admirable.
This is not of common horror movies. This is the newest classic from Hollywood. I wish this movie be remade in India. Its needed. Star cast of movie justify their roles, especially Lily Taylor & Vera Farmiga acts so sympathetically that you feel your presence in that demonic basement where a nanny says, ‘Look what she made me to do’? The emotion flown at the climax is heart breaching. The curse of a witch, Mom wishes to surfeit her own daughter, events swaying from scary to sentimental and the evangelical end of all horror drama makes The Conjuring an all-time horror classic. If you liked the concept of Ek Thi Daayan which asked more questions than it answered, Here’s another that kind of creation. A scary treat to watch & a precarious reel to deal with, The Conjuring leads you to the world where you get to know that Demon is the absence of Giest.
